This research project is designed to assist us all to establish a more confident knowledge of the historical underpinning of the novel The Book Thief. You devised your own lines of inquiry and are now asked to collaborate with your chosen partner to build a 2 minute presentation to share with the class on Friday.

  • Dachau – When it was established. What living conditions were like. How many Jews and others were placed there. How many died. Evie and Piper
  • What reasons sat behind Hitler’s hatred of the Jews? Lauren, Summer and Amelia
  • Timeline for the War in Europe. Red, Nico and Barnaby
  • What kind of bombs would have been dropped on Molching? Tana, Josh and Abhishek
  • Did the book titles mentioned in The Book Thief exist? If so, what can we learn about this?
  • What useful documentaries are available now that could help us understand the world of Germany during Hitler’s reign
  • What kind of content did Hitler’s Mein Kampf have in it? Taki and Hadley
  • What happened on the Russian Front to the German Army that was so important? Thomas and Ethan
  • Which events mentioned in the novel are historically true? Lucia and Nikita
  • Who was Jessie Owens? What’s significant about him? Imogen, Abby, Helene and Eve
  • Eugenics and Hitler’s “Master Race”
  • The Weimar Republic and Germany’s “Humiliation” after World War I
