In this short video explainer, I break down the process of examining quotations for their language effects – and explore how to re-connect the observations made to the bigger ideas of the text.

Once this is shown to you, the video contains a task for you to complete where you have a go at extending upon what you’ve learned.

These two practice paragraphs will form the main body of your work for tomorrow’s period (on Friday) – and we will go over them together next week.

Task

The task outlined in the video above asks you to write to analytical paragraphs that explore the use of language and meaning of the following two quotations:

“Yes the Führer decided that he would rule the world with words. “I will never fire a gun, I will not have to””

“The injury of words. Yes the brutality of words. Cuts had opened and a series of wounds were rising to the surface of her skin”

  • Identify another language effect in the supplied quotations
  • Explain how this feature works to strengthen Zusak’s ideas about words and language.
  • Advanced: Describe, with reference to a quote, how this example is typical of the form of the genre Magical Realism
